We, at BASD Empowering Women Department, aim to mobilize women to provide a more powerful view of their role in life through:
Through our broad spectrum programs and through many causes we defend, we are continuously encouraging Self Empowerment, Self-Esteem, and Personal Growth.
Eradicating Illiteracy Committee:
To reach our development goal, we have established the “Eradication Illiteracy Program” for young and adults. Women are the core of families and society. As Mr. Kofi Annan said:
“When women thrive, all of society benefits, and succeeding generations are given a better start in life.”
In cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs, we conducted several programs, and more than 50 adults graduated from our special centers.
Health Awareness Committee:
The HAC members are leaders in Anti-Drug and Anti-smoking awareness campaigns in Lebanon. With UN-trained and award-winning coaches more than 2300 persons attended gatherings in schools, universities, and social clubs in 2010.
In addition to its diverse health awareness campaigns, the HAC holds gatherings with specialists to enlighten important health issues like HIV, Hearing problems , Treatment by Hypnosis, Osteoporosis…

BASD Environmental Program
We, the Environment and Sustainable Development Committee (ESDC) members, believe that raising environmental awareness is the corner stone to sustainable development. Investing in Human beings is investing in the Future. Because preserving the environment is not only one person’s responsibility, but it is a global issue, every individual should be a partner.
Our MOTO: Our environment, our patrimony
Throughout our work, we are promoting environmentally sound practices internally- in our own activities and externally, to the mass population.
Internal Program:
It consists of raising awareness among BASD community – within our offices- about:
External Program:
We are promoting a culture of cooperation to preserve the environment.
Cultural Committee
The CC works mainly on women empowerment:
Children Municipal Council
The Rafik Hariri Foundation and the Ministry of Education, in coordination with BASD, organize the children’s municipal elections in Beirut. They first started in 2001. They aim at teaching the young generation about democracy and at encouraging them to improve their society. They resemble actual municipal elections.
Students aged between 11 and 13 in private and public schools, from various regions of Beirut, present their candidatures for a position on the city’s children municipal council, they prepare an electoral campaign, and they work on convincing their peers to vote for them.
Activities:
Nurseries
BASD is managing two nurseries following high care standards since.
We are ensuring that our environment is safe and secure for all children, parents, and staff. Our locations are children-friendly.
Our Nurseries’ staff receives regular training and updates on Health and Safety issues. Each Nursery has a Co-coordinator who is responsible for all issues within their Nursery.

We, at BASD Empowering Women Department, aim to mobilize women to provide a more powerful view of their role in life through:
- Promoting gender-balanced decision-making by developing the participation of women at all levels of social, economical, and political aspects of life to enable them to be involved in the decision-making process and the design and implementation of National Policies.
- Working to eliminate all types of discrimination against women as per CEDAW agreement.
- Encouraging intercommunication between women and organizations dealing with women related issues at all levels.

- Energy consumption & Heat control in the offices
- Recycling of papers with Sukleen
- Environment friendly behavior
- Tree plantation in our headquarters’ garden.
External Program:
We are promoting a culture of cooperation to preserve the environment.
- With the collaboration of the “Children Municipality council”,
we participated in campaigns:
- To clean sandy beaches.
- To plant trees to re-embellish public schools in some areas of Beirut
- On the 16th and 17th of December 2009, more than 2000 persons signed the BASD petition to support “the Lebanese Agenda against Global Warming” presented by HE PM Saad Hariri in Copenhagen.
- We are working to strengthen young people’s environmental awareness and engage children and youth in environmental issues through lecturing on global warming and eco-citizenship in schools.
- We are preparing a series of publications on environmental education for children.
- To help raising people’s awareness, we published articles in the local newspapers.
- We are cooperating with other NGOs to clean the beach in Beirut.
- To promote Beirut as Healthy City, we are cooperating with the Municipality of Beirut and WHO through conducting environmental awareness activities during the “Beirut Health Fair” on June 12, 2010.
Cultural Committee
The CC works mainly on women empowerment:
- On the occasion of “International Women Day”, we organized a conference entitled: “Empowering Women to participate in Political and Public life”.
- We hold a series of educational gatherings to introduce women to their civic rights.
- We discuss newly released books concerning the themes of women and childhood.
- We hold reunions with politicians and journalists to spread political awareness.

- Organizing a summer camp for all elected councils all over Lebanon. It aims at acquainting the children with different regions in Lebanon.
- Explaining the UN Children’s Rights Chart
- Getting involved in environmental activities.
